Bayer process

The Bayer process is the principal industrial means of refining bauxite to produce alumina (aluminium oxide) and was developed by Carl Josef Bayer. Bauxite, the most important ore of aluminium, contains only 30–60% aluminium oxide (Al2O3), the rest being a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. The aluminium oxide must be further purified before it can be refined into aluminium metal. The Bayer Process was invented and patented in 1887 by Austrian scientist Karl Josef Bayer. Two to three tonnes of bauxite are required to produce one tonne of alumina. 90% of the global alumina supply of around 90 Mining and Refining Process International

Introduction. The production of alumina (Al 2 O 3) from Bauxite by the Bayer process is a multi-step procedure, where a number of the process steps lead to the generation of hazardous waste [1].Solid waste, in the form of red mud caustic tailings, require careful waste management programs, and research programs have been put into The Bayer process comprises three principal stages ( Fig. 2): bauxite digestion, aluminium hydroxide precipitation and aluminium hydroxide calcination. Characterization of Bauxite Residue from a Press Filter System

A new step in the Bayer process has been used to recover NaOH and to reduce its content in red mud. After digestion, the residue is separated from the Bayer liquor and goes through press filters, which enables the recovery of NaOH and decreases the moisture content. It is well known that red mud is one of the most important sources Bayer process, procedure for obtaining alumina from the aluminum ore bauxite. The alumina can then be used for various industrial purposes or smelted to provide aluminum. The first step in the process is the mixing of ground bauxite into a solution of sodium hydroxide. By applying steam and pressure in tanks containing the mixture, the bauxite Bayer process Encyclopedia
